What is The Dark Night of The Soul?

A Dark Night of The Soul is…

In a Dark Night, the physical body may feel tired more often and you may not be able to exercise or move in the ways that you may typically be able to move. You may feel as if your body is moving through the world, but your spirit and self are outside of the body. You may also have trouble tasting food or experiencing pleasure in your body, whether that be sexual, sensual, or otherwise.

Often, the emotions in a Dark Night come through as muted or blurred. It has sometimes been described as feeling that you are seeing the world through a pane of glass or at a distance. Emotions come with a question of what feels real, true, or honest. You may doubt that you even have any feelings left in moments where it seems that tears have run dry or you are unable to become angry and respond appropriately to a situation.

Within a Dark Night, there is often a sense of loss and disconnection with anything greater than yourself. Whether this is a shift in your personal relationship with spirituality, faith, or religion, or simply a sense that you no longer feel connection with any ‘oneness’ in the world, this loss and disconnection can feel incredibly lonely.

I focus on Dark Nights of the Soul with my clients, because I believe that the depth of our life must be matched by our willingness to explore and see the parts of ourselves that we try to hide in a “polite society.” We push down the thoughts, feelings, dreams, and beliefs that, with a little light shining on them, can set us free from fear, anxiety, and depression.

I work with clients to become a little less afraid of the dark parts of themselves because I know just how hard it can be to do that alone.
